Caswell County Regional Overview

Caswell County – Our treasure beneath the pines.

From the moment you enter Caswell County you will be entranced by acres of virgin forest…miles of winding country roads…fertile fields of crops….rolling pastures…. meandering streams…. and acres of oak, maple, ash, and pine trees.

But take a closer look. By the side of the road and beneath the pines is a treasure of history and a way of life waiting to be enjoyed by all who make the effort.

Caswell County, North Carolina was established in 1777.  Independence had been declared and the Revolutionary War had begun when Caswell County was carved from Colonial Orange County and created by the first state government to make governmental agencies more accessible to the area's residents.  The new county was appropriately named Caswell after Richard Caswell, the first governor of the new state of North Carolina.

The Brightleaf Tobacco curing process was discovered in Caswell County, and tobacco production prior to the Civil War made it one of the wealthiest counties in the state.  Today, tobacco production is still an important industry in Caswell.

Almost square in shape and approximately 426 square miles in size, the county is very rural with a population of 25,000.  Incorporated towns are Yanceyville and Milton, Yanceyville being the county seat. Unincorporated communities are Casville, Leasburg, Pelham, Prospect Hill, Purley, Semora, Cherry Grove and Blanch.

We are uniquely situated only 45 minutes northeast of Greensboro and an hour from Chapel Hill and the Research Triangle Park.  We border the state of Virginia and the city of Danville.  Homeowners have easy access to two major airports, as well as all the other amenities of "city life", but with the benefit of a relaxed country lifestyle and great outdoor recreation.

For residents wanting to stay close to home, we have excellent live entertainment at the Caswell County Civic Center. Since 1979 the Caswell County Civic Center has set the stage for the civic, social, and cultural life of the entire Northern Piedmont.  With a full-size, professionally equipped stage, 912 seat auditorium, meeting and banquet facilities for up to 500, lobby art gallery, professional staff, and full complement of technical equipment and support services, the Caswell County Civic Center is the facility of choice from everything from Broadway shows and corporate retreats to social events for groups of 10 or 1000.

Outdoors enthusiast will love Hyco Lake – a 3,780 acre lake available to the public for skiing, fishing and other water sports.  The golf fan can enjoy the advantages of Caswell Pines Golf Course, one of the top ten rated public courses in the piedmont of North Carolina.

This is just a brief sampling of the wonderful treats that await you in Caswell County.
