Stokes County Regional Overview

Whether you're putting on your hiking boots, saddling a horse, or dipping your feet in our cool waters, Stokes County truly has a wealth of activities awaiting you round every bend.

One of Stokes County's most wonderful treasures is Hanging Rock State Park.  Hanging Rock is home to nearly 7000 acres of exquisite scenic views including a mountain lake, sheer cliffs, and thick forests, which are home to over 300 species of mountain flora.

Camping is popular and Hanging Rock State Park offers an array of options. If you want to learn about the park's history, which dates back to 1935, stop by the Hanging Rock Visitor's Center during the summer where you can see depictions of the natural and cultural history of the park. In recent years the park has attracted well over 400,000 visitors annually.

The county seat of Stokes County is Danbury. Danbury is located on NC 8/89 approximately 30 miles north of Winston Salem and is called the "Gateway to Hanging Rock". The Stokes County Government Center, Arts Council, School Board, a public library, and other public services are found within the town limits. Stokes – Reynolds Memorial Hospital is located about a half mile northwest of the town.

Danbury is a popular rest stop for bicyclists, motorcyclists, and driving enthusiast due to the numerous scenic roads in Stokes County. Historical features in the town include the Moratock Iron Furnace, Wilson Fulton House, the Old Stokes County Court House, and Moody's Tavern (McCanless Hotel).
