One of Stokes County's most wonderful treasures is Hanging Rock State Park. Hanging Rock is home to nearly 7000 acres
of exquisite scenic views including a mountain lake, sheer cliffs, and thick
forests, which are home to over 300 species of mountain flora.
Camping is popular and Hanging Rock State Park offers an
array of options. If you want to learn
about the park's history, which dates back to 1935, stop by the Hanging Rock
Visitor's Center during the summer where you can see depictions of the natural
and cultural history of the park. In
recent years the park has attracted well over 400,000 visitors annually.
The county seat of Stokes County is Danbury. Danbury is located on NC 8/89 approximately 30 miles north of Winston Salem and is
called the "Gateway to Hanging Rock". The Stokes County Government Center, Arts Council,
School Board, a public library, and other public services are found within the
town limits. Stokes – Reynolds Memorial Hospital is located about
a half mile northwest of the town.
Danbury is a popular rest
stop for bicyclists, motorcyclists, and driving enthusiast due to the numerous
scenic roads in Stokes County. Historical features in the town include the
Moratock Iron Furnace, Wilson Fulton House, the Old Stokes County Court House,
and Moody's Tavern (McCanless Hotel).
